~ = approximate: distance and climbing change with your start point and the way you ride. Riding time is an estimate of time in the saddle, from a sporty to a relaxed rider on the best bike for the route, without wind or stops.

The ride

From Playa Blanca the loop is about 90 km with around 1,000 m of climbing. It runs past the salt pans of Janubio and the village of Yaiza, crosses the national park on the LZ-67, carries on through Mancha Blanca to La Santa on the north-west coast, and comes back through Tinajo and the vineyards of La Geria. The detour to El Golfo adds about 15 km.

Inside the park you ride the main road, the LZ-67. You can't leave the road anywhere in the park, and you can only stop in the marked lay-bys. The Ruta de los Volcanes, the loop up to the craters, is by park bus only; since June 2026 a visit needs a timed ticket booked online.

Want something shorter? A loop through Tinajo, Mancha Blanca, the park and La Geria from the Monumento al Campesino, in the middle of the island, is about 45 km with around 400 m of climbing.

The way

  1. 1. Playa Blanca to Yaiza

Past the salt pans of Janubio. Take the detour to the green lagoon at El Golfo if you have the legs.

  2. 2. Through Timanfaya

North on the LZ-67 through the lava fields of the national park. Open road, no shade.

  3. 3. Mancha Blanca and La Santa

Out of the park through Mancha Blanca, down to the coast at La Santa.

  4. 4. Back through La Geria

Through Tinajo, then south through the vineyards in black ash and back to Playa Blanca.

Food and water

Fill your bottles in Yaiza before the park: there are no villages in the lava fields. After the park you come through Mancha Blanca, La Santa and Tinajo.

Wind and tips

With the usual north-east wind, the ride north through the park is into the wind, and the ride home through La Geria is with it.

The black lava gets hot in the sun. Take more water than you think, and sun cream.

Timanfaya questions
