~ = approximate: distance and climbing change with your start point and the way you ride. Riding time is an estimate of time in the saddle, from a sporty to a relaxed rider on the best bike for the route, without wind or stops.
The ride
From Yaiza to Masdache and back is about 31 km with around 350 m of climbing. You ride through Uga and then on the LZ-30, the road that crosses La Geria from Uga to Mozaga, by the Monumento al Campesino.
The vines grow in hollows dug down through the volcanic ash, each with a curved stone wall on the windward side. Bodegas line the road: Bodega La Geria has a shop and a terrace, and El Grifo at Masdache, making wine since 1775, runs tours you can book.
The LZ-30 is a main road with traffic. Ride in single file and keep to the right.
The way
-
1. Yaiza to Uga
From the white village of Yaiza to Uga, where the LZ-30 begins.
-
2. Through La Geria
North-east on the LZ-30 through the vineyards, past Bodega La Geria.
-
3. Masdache and back
Turn round at El Grifo in Masdache and ride back the same way to Yaiza.
Stops
The bodegas on the LZ-30 are the stops on this ride. Taste, but go easy: Spain's drink limits apply on a bike too (and the limit is zero under 18).
Tips
From Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca, add the ride to Yaiza, or ride the whole LZ-30 to the Monumento al Campesino: Yaiza to the Monumento and back is about 40 km.
There is no shade in the vineyards. Take water and sun cream.
