~ = approximate: distance and climbing change with your start point and the way you ride. Riding time is an estimate of time in the saddle, from a sporty to a relaxed rider on the best bike for the route, without wind or stops.
The ride
From Puerto del Carmen to Arrecife is about 15 km each way, almost all of it flat and close to the sea. You pass the beaches of Los Pocillos and Matagorda, ride round the end of the airport, and on through Playa Honda into Arrecife.
In Puerto del Carmen, ride on the bike lane along the Avenida de las Playas (10 km/h), not on the promenade: in Spain bikes aren't allowed in pedestrian areas. In Playa Honda the seafront avenue is closed to bikes; follow the signed cycle streets through the town instead. Near the airport, signs may ask you to get off and push for a short stretch.
You can turn round anywhere. Playa Honda, about halfway, makes a good shorter ride.
The way
-
1. Puerto del Carmen
East on the bike lane along the Avenida de las Playas.
-
2. Los Pocillos and Matagorda
Past the long beaches at the east end of town.
-
3. Playa Honda
Round the airport, then through Playa Honda on the signed cycle streets.
-
4. Arrecife

Stops
There are cafés and beach bars along the way, and in Arrecife around the Charco de San Ginés, the lagoon where the town began as a fishing village. Lock your bike when you stop: a lock comes with every bike we rent.
Tips
In places the bike lane is on the same level as the promenade, so walkers cross it. Ride slowly and ring your bell.
With the usual north-east wind, the ride to Arrecife is often into the wind, and the way back is easier.
