~ = approximate: distance and climbing change with your start point and the way you ride. Riding time is an estimate of time in the saddle, from a sporty to a relaxed rider on the best bike for the route, without wind or stops.

The ride

The loop from Costa Teguise is about 85 km with around 1,200 m of climbing, and takes in the longest climb on the island.

The Tabayesco climb starts in Arrieta on the east coast and climbs about 10.5 km at an average of around 5.5%, gaining nearly 600 m. It never gets very steep (the steepest bits are 9–10%), but it is long, and the top is often in the wind.

From Haría you ride on to the Mirador del Río, a viewpoint by César Manrique built into the cliffs near the northern tip of the island. Below you is the strait of El Río and the island of La Graciosa.

The way

  1. 1. Costa Teguise to Arrieta

North along the east coast. Flat to rolling, with the wind usually in your face.

  2. 2. The Tabayesco climb

About 10.5 km from Arrieta up the valley of Tabayesco, average around 5.5%, then down into Haría.

  3. 3. Haría to the Mirador del Río

Through the valley of palms at Haría and on via Máguez to the Mirador del Río. The viewpoint building has a café inside (entry is paid).

  4. 4. Back south

Down to Órzola and back along the coast road. Ridden the other way, the road from Órzola up to the Mirador is about 10 km at 4.5%.

Shorter option and stops

For a shorter day, ride from Costa Teguise to Arrieta, up Tabayesco to Haría, and home over Los Valles and Teguise: about 56 km and 1,000 m of climbing.

Arrieta has restaurants on the harbour, Haría has bars on its main square, and the Mirador del Río has its café (open daily 10:00–17:00). Jonnie Bakes in Teguise is a cyclists' favourite on the shorter loop (mornings only, closed Monday and Tuesday).

Wind and tips

The wind usually comes from the north or north-east, so the ride north is into it and the ride home is with it. The Mirador sits high on the cliffs: take a jacket for the descent.

Water: fill your bottles in Arrieta before the climb.
